I’m a songwriter from a small town in rural New South Wales, raised in a family where music was always around. Everyone in my family played, wrote, or performed in some way. Growing up in that environment, music never felt separate from life, it was just part of it.
I started playing guitar when I was six and writing songs not long after. Early on, I wrote about whatever was in front of me, what I was doing, what I wanted to do, and how I saw the world at the time. As I got older, I became more focused on the music itself. I spent years playing electric guitar, mostly blues, rock, pop and jazz, before shifting heavily into drums, where I was playing mostly rock and metal. That mix of styles shaped how I hear and approach songs now.
A turning point for me was discovering how powerful lyrics could be. Up until then, music had been more about feel, but once I started really listening, everything changed. That led me to focus more seriously on songwriting.
In my early twenties, I had the opportunity to attend a songwriting retreat in Nashville. It was the first time I’d been surrounded by that level of musicianship and dedication. I got to write, meet other artists, and play my own songs live. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me a clear understanding of the level I wanted to reach.
Coming back from that experience, I realised how much work there was to do, not just in writing songs, but in developing a voice and something that feels honest and lasting. That’s something I’m still working on and always will be.
A lot of what drives me comes from live music. Some of the most important moments in my life have been spent at shows with my family, watching, listening, and feeling completely connected to what was happening. That sense of connection is what I’m trying to create in my own music.
If someone hears a song of mine and finds something in it, whether that’s comfort, clarity, or even the motivation to pick up an instrument themselves, then that’s everything I’m aiming for.
